Therapeutic Ultrasound & Light Therapy
Supportive Treatment for Breast Inflammation and Tissue Healing
Breast inflammation, persistent clogs, nipple trauma, and mastitis symptoms can escalate quickly — and when you’re breastfeeding, pain can feel urgent and overwhelming.
In addition to comprehensive lactation assessment, I offer in-office and in-home therapeutic ultrasound and light therapy as supportive modalities when clinically indicated.
These treatments are never standalone quick fixes — they are integrated into a broader plan addressing feeding mechanics, milk transfer, and inflammatory contributors.
Therapeutic Ultrasound (TUS)
Therapeutic ultrasound uses targeted sound-wave energy to gently warm tissue, increase circulation, and support reduction of localized inflammation and edema.
It may be helpful for:
• Inflammatory mastitis
• Persistent or recurrent ductal narrowing
• Areas of firmness that are not resolving
• Engorgement with inflammatory features
Treatment is non-invasive and typically lasts 5–10 minutes per affected area.
Ultrasound is most effective when paired with lactation assessment to address underlying contributors.
Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT) / Photobiomodulation
Low level light therapy uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to support tissue repair and modulate inflammation at the cellular level.
It may be beneficial for:
• Nipple trauma or cracking
• Persistent nipple pain
• Inflammatory breast pain
• Tissue healing support
Emerging evidence suggests photobiomodulation may help reduce pain and support wound healing in lactating patients.
Like ultrasound, it is used as an adjunct — not a replacement — for comprehensive care.
Can These Therapies Be Used Together?
Yes. When clinically appropriate, therapeutic ultrasound and light therapy can be safely combined to support inflammation reduction and tissue healing.
Treatment plans are individualized based on symptoms, clinical findings, and overall lactation goals.
Important: Eligibility for Treatment
If you are not currently a Serenity Lactation client, a full lactation consultation with me — or a referral from your IBCLC, midwife, or OB provider — is required prior to treatment.
This ensures that therapy is appropriate, safe, and aligned with your overall care plan.
