Clogged Ducts and Mastitis - Breast Inflammation
"Mastitis" does not automatically mean "infection". Mastitis literally means inflammation of mammary tissue.
Inflammation decreases milk removal due to narrowing of ducts.
Do not massage a breast hard, ever. Breast tissue is delicate and prone to damage and inflammation with lots of massage.
Use a cold compress or ice to decrease inflammation and discomfort, protecting your skin with a shirt or towel. You may apply cold compress/ice for 15-20 minutes on each breast every hour.
Take anti-inflammatory supplements (turmeric, ginger, garlic) and/or medications (ibuprofen) around the clock to keep inflammation under control.
Ensure your bra is not compressing your breast tissue.
Prior to pumping or breastfeeding, remove your bra completely, lean forward to allow your breasts to hang, gently move your breasts in a circle, and gently stroke your breasts. This increases lymph flow to aid in reducing inflammation.
