Clogged Ducts and Mastitis - Breast Inflammation

"Mastitis" does not automatically mean "infection". Mastitis literally means inflammation of mammary tissue.

  • Inflammation decreases milk removal due to narrowing of ducts.

  • Do not massage a breast hard, ever. Breast tissue is delicate and prone to damage and inflammation with lots of massage.

  • Use a cold compress or ice to decrease inflammation and discomfort, protecting your skin with a shirt or towel. You may apply cold compress/ice for 15-20 minutes on each breast every hour.

  • Take anti-inflammatory supplements (turmeric, ginger, garlic) and/or medications (ibuprofen) around the clock to keep inflammation under control.

  • Ensure your bra is not compressing your breast tissue.

  • Prior to pumping or breastfeeding, remove your bra completely, lean forward to allow your breasts to hang, gently move your breasts in a circle, and gently stroke your breasts. This increases lymph flow to aid in reducing inflammation.

Use lymphatic drainage techniques, such as massage, gentle rebounding, vibration, and K-taping:
